Description

The PW198-11 is a wheeled excavator from Komatsu in the upper part of the PW range, built for contractors who need heavy capacity combined with fast movement between jobsites.

PW stands for Power Wheeled. 198 refers to the weight class of around 18 to 20 tonnes. As a wheeled excavator it can in many cases travel on public roads without a low-bed trailer, giving faster logistics on projects with multiple nearby work locations. A transport height of just 3.1 metres also makes it straightforward to carry on a standard truck with a loading ramp up to 4 metres.

The operating weight ranges from 17,385 to 19,630 kg depending on arm configuration and undercarriage equipment. The machine is powered by a Komatsu SAA4D107E-5 engine delivering 129 kW and is supplied with a two-piece boom and three selectable arm lengths of 2,100 mm, 2,500 mm and 3,000 mm. Maximum bucket capacity is 1.13 m³ and digging force is 102 kN, rising to 111 kN with PowerMax active.

The PW198-11 is well suited to trenching, utility work, road and street construction and heavy lifting operations in urban environments. The short tail swing, 570 mm shorter than a standard machine in the same weight class, allows the machine to work close to buildings, barriers and other infrastructure without requiring an unnecessarily large exclusion zone around the work area.

Compared to the lighter models in the PW range, the PW198-11 stands out with higher engine output, greater digging force and a hydraulic system with a pump capacity of up to 295 l/min. Machines such as the PW148-11 and PW158-11 are better suited where weight restrictions or tight travel conditions require a more compact machine. The PW198-11 is the choice when those models reach their capacity limits.

The HydrauMind closed-centre load-sensing hydraulic system with pressure compensation offers six working modes including lifting, breaker and economy, letting the operator match performance to the task. The machine is factory-prepared for tiltrotator use with an open-centre circuit, enabling simultaneous use of high-demand hydraulic attachments. The engine meets EU Stage V and is HVO-compatible from the factory, with a stated reduction in fuel consumption of up to 8 percent compared to the previous generation.

The ROPS-certified SpaceCab is mounted on viscous damper mounts for low vibration, with an in-cab noise level of 69 dB(A). Four KomVision cameras provide 270-degree visibility on the widescreen monitor, and KOMTRAX telematics is standard for operational monitoring and planned maintenance.

You can find the full range of Komatsu excavators at Hesselberg. Operating the PW198-11 requires a machine operator's licence, typically class M2. Hesselberg offers heavy equipment operator courses for certification and skills development.
